On the 5th of May, the inhabitants of Portoferraio celebrate the Napoleonic May in memory of Napoleon's arrival on the Elba in May 1814.
During the Napoleonic May, celebrated every 5th of May, a great solemn mass is celebrated in the Church of the Mercy, in Portoferraio, in honour of the French Emperor. The funerary mask and the mould of Napoleon's hand (usually kept in the small museum nearby) are then displayed on a sarcophagus. Then, extras in period costumes parade through the streets of the Elbo capital in the direction of the Palazzina dei Mulini, the residence between the Stella and Falcone forts where Napoleon lived during his exile in 1814 and 1815.
