The Ghiaie beach, covered with small white pebbles, is Portoferraio's largest beach. It's easy to get to (there's even a bus service from the town center), well-equipped but very busy in summer. A protected area since 1971, the seabed on this part of the coast is home to a diverse and thriving flora and fauna. The beach is famous for the legend that its sea-polished pebbles were stained with the sweat drops of the Argonauts, heroes of Greek mythology.
