DUOMO SAN LORENZO
Cathedral of Grosseto, the most famous and most visited monument of the city, dedicated to St. Lawrence
Undoubtedly the city's most famous and visited monument, dedicated to Saint Lawrence. Grosseto Cathedral, defined by Emanuele Repetti as "tempio grandioso" (grandiose temple) in his Dizionario geografico fisico storico della Toscana (1833), links its history to that of the city.
The architect Sozzo di Pace Rustichini, who came from Siena, began work on the foundations of the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Assunta in the 13th century. It took Grosseto's duomo two centuries to rise up, the internal struggles with Siena constantly slowing down the progress of the work. The construction of the bell tower dates back to 1402, by Domenico di Francesco da Montemerano.
The cathedral is presented in a classic simplicity. Its Romanesque façade, which alternates white and black marble, owes much to its restoration dating back to the first half of the 19th century. It has three gates and an elegant loggia topped by a rose window. Inside, with three naves, the cathedral houses, among other things, the superb Madonna delle Grazie (1470), a painting by Matteo di Giovanni representing the patron saint of the diocese. It should be noted that over time, the various restorations have resulted in the loss of many original features inside the cathedral. But the baptismal font, the two historic stained-glass windows and the chapel of the Crucifix (cappella del Crocifisso) deserve to be admired.
To find out everything about the Grosseto duomo, audioguides are available (in Italian and English) at the entrance.
