CHIESA SAN FRANCESCO
Church built by the Benedictine monks, offered to St. Francis, in Grosseto.
Built by Benedictine monks in the 13th century, the church was offered to Saint Francis as he was returning from one of his expeditions to the east. Restored in 1231, it was largely embellished in 1289 under the orders of Nello Pannocchieschi. The decoration is nevertheless very sober, like the Gothic façade. Inside, with a single nave, there is a magnificent crucifix by Duccio di Boninsegna, above the main altar, as well as frescoes by Nasini in the chapel on the right. The bell tower was added in 1927.
