MEDIUM WALL
The Porta Nuova and the Porta Reale, fortifications that today form a pleasant tree-lined public promenade
In 1574, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Francis I de Medici, ordered the creation of a new wall to replace the old one, whose work had begun in the 12th century. The architect Baldassarre Lanci is responsible for the plans, the primary objective is to protect the southern part of the city. The work was completed nearly 20 years later. The Porta Nuova, to the north of the city, and the Porta Reale, on the opposite side, were the two main entrances to the city. Today, these fortifications form a pleasant public promenade lined with trees.
