PARCO NATURALE DELLA MAREMMA
A wild and precious natural park, where you can go hiking, birdwatching in the salt marshes, canoeing..
The Maremma Nature Park, created in 1975, covers almost 10,000 hectares and is virtually untouched by nature. The reserve, located between Principina a Mare and Talamone, is mainly made up of pine forests - including the Alberese, reclaimed in 1844 by the Lorena family. It also includes the Uccellina mountains (covered with dense Mediterranean vegetation, pine forests and ancient olive groves), the mouth of the Ombrone river, and numerous towers built against pirate invasions. This protected area includes the Palude della Trappola, a very marshy area rich in wildlife, with large colonies of marsh birds and some birds of prey. Many bird species are protected here.
Immense and wild at the same time, the Maremma Natural Park offers numerous hiking trails, with different levels of difficulty. The themes of the walks are just as varied, with routes focusing on the history of the Benedictine nuns in the area, the life of the deer, or the history of the medieval ruins, for example. It's not uncommon to come across free-roaming animals such as wild boar, foxes, fallow deer, weasels and that uniquely Italian species, the maremmana, a long-horned cow (which bears an uncanny resemblance to buffalo). In the distance, the remains of the ancient Abbazia di San Rabano stand out, the only non-natural feature in this untamed setting. The landscape is absolutely magnificent.
