TERM DI SATURNIA
Nestled on the hills of the Maremma, in the open air, the Saturnia thermal baths are accessible free of charge day and night.
Saturnia's superb hot springs are among the best-known in Tuscany. Nestled in the Maremma hills, this large open-air spa area is fully accessible to the public all year round. Forming a multitude of small natural limestone pools, these thermal baths offer a surprisingly turquoise-blue setting in the midst of nature. The vapors rising from the thermal water, combined with the smell of sulfur, give the place a surreal appearance. The various pools are all at different heights, and the crystal-clear water flows from one to the next like a waterfall.
The two main waterfalls are Cascate del Mulino and Cascate del Gorello. The 37°C waters, rich in hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and mineral salts, were discovered by the Etruscans and exploited by the Romans in the 3rd century BC. Since ancient times, the Saturnia thermal baths have been renowned for their curative properties and numerous benefits: not only for the skin, but also for the respiratory system and rheumatism.
The only drawback is that the place is almost uninhabitable in summer due to the crowds. There are so many people in the water that you hardly dare get wet. On the other hand, it's very pleasant the rest of the year, an invitation to relax in a natural site of exceptional beauty. A final word of advice: bring plastic sandals and don't forget to remove your jewelry, as the sulphurous water oxidizes metal objects!
