FORTEZZA SPAGNOLA
Coastal fortress built by the Spanish in the second half of the century, at Porto Santo Stefano
Built in the second half of the 16th century by the Spanish, the fortress was for a long time the first building in the city. Once it was completed, many Spanish and Italian families flocked to Porto Santo Stefano to settle there. During the Napoleonic period, the French reinforced the structure in order to better resist attacks from British ships. From the top of the fortress that dominates the city, all around Monte Argentario, we discover, melted into the landscape, many watchtowers.
