BASILICA SAN PIETRO
This majestic and solemn basilica conceals true artistic treasures.
At the end of the borgo XX Giugno, near the San Costanzo gate, it is a rare example of a church from the year one thousand whose original structure is still well preserved. The exterior features a splendid bell tower with a spire and an elegant courtyard surrounded by seventeenth-century arcades, while the interior has a basilica plan, three naves and antique columns, and contains important paintings by Perugino, Guido Reni, Aliense (Antonio Vassilacchi) and the Guercino. Majestic and solemn, the basilica contains real artistic treasures that could have been housed in a museum. In the central nave there is a precious coffered ceiling, the work of Benedetto di Montepulciano (16th century).
The medieval orchard(orto medievale) next to the church, which was recreated a few years ago using the skills of the Benedictine nuns, is also superb. The design of these monastic gardens in the Middle Ages was inspired by the Garden of Eden... The German historian Ferdinand Gregorovius, who specializes in the medieval history of Rome, wrote in his account of the Basilica of San Pietro, entitled " Walks in Italy": "Its church, a beautiful basilica with ancient granite columns, is considered the most precious jewel of the city, and is a veritable museum of Umbrian painting. It contains splendid paintings by Perugino, Orazio Alfani, Doni, Lo Spagna and other masters, and precious copies of the works of Perugino and Raphael, made by Sassoferrato.
