GALLERIA NAZIONALE DELL'UMBRIA
Gallery exhibiting the largest collection of frescoes and paintings from the Umbrian school in Perugia.
The gallery covers almost 4,000 square metres in 40 rooms in the magnificent Priors' Palace and contains the largest collection of frescoes and paintings from the Umbrian school, mainly from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Among the countless masterpieces are works by Peter of Cortona, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Benozzo Gozzoli, Arnolfo di Cambio, the Pinturicchio, Fra Angelico(Madonna and Child with Angels and Saints), Piero della Francesca (Polyptych of Saint Anthony Madonna and Child surrounded by saints) and Pietro Vannucci, known as Perugino, a famous Renaissance painter(Adoration of the Magi and a Pietà). The Perugino, who, with the purity of his drawing and the suave feeling of his colours, gave us the most beautiful expression of the grace and gentleness of Umbria. Throughout the rooms, we will observe the progressive evolution of painting with, for example, the introduction of perspective and the volume of bodies and faces.
In addition to paintings, the National Gallery of Umbria also has sculptures, ceramics, embroidery, ivories and jewellery, as well as the originals of the Pisano marble statuettes from the Great Fountain. This museum is a must-see, especially for lovers of art and religious painting, which has nothing to envy the museums of Tuscany. Conferences and concerts are also held in the Gallery.
