MONTE INGINO
A remarkable natural site offering a beautiful view of Gubbio and its surroundings.
Gubbio, this city from another age, as if taken from a fairy tale, seems to have been literally carved out of the side of Mount Ingino. Its peak, at 827 metres above sea level, majestically dominates the town. To get there, you have to take a kind of cable car made up of metal gondolas. It takes 6 minutes to get up there (you have to stand up, so you'd better be in good health). From there, you have a magnificent view of the city and the surrounding countryside. To visit, the small museum dedicated to the famous festival of the Corsa dei Ceri and the charming basilica Sant'Ubaldo (dating from the 13th century), high up on Mount Ingino. In this basilica, a glass coffin above the altar contains the remains of Saint Ubaldo, who was bishop of Gubbio in the 12th century. A café with a panoramic terrace is also available, but we recommend that you bring a picnic. The descent, on a wide path, is very pleasant to walk, and offers striking views of the city. In short, it's the walk to take when you come to Gubbio!
Listed in the Guinness Book of Records! Every year, the largest Christmas tree in the world (750 metres high), decorated with 850 lights, is erected on the hillside on the southern side of Mount Ingino. It shines over an area the size of five football fields. The tree was first erected in 1981 by the local people in honour of their patron saint, Saint Ubaldo.
