ERMITAGE OF THE PRISONS
A pleasant site with a convent and grotto, one of the places of retreat of St. Francis in Assisi.
After a 4 km walk, we discover the hermitage, which is hidden in the slopes of Mount Subasio, among beech and holm oaks, at 791 m. Several caves dug into the rock and narrow passages, which lead to the refectory and the grotto, served as places of retreat for St. Francis and his followers, who were concerned with a very sober monastic life. Blessed Andrew of Spello, a perfect model of obedience, also lived here for a long time. In 1400, St. Bernardino of Siena had a small convent built here, which can be visited today.
