CASCATA DELLE MARMORE
The Marmore waterfall, one of the highest in Europe, owes its name to the calcium salts present on the rocks.
A magnificent waterfall... artificial. It's hard to believe when you see it, but the Cascata delle Marmore was built by the Romans in 271 B.C. to reduce the volume of the Velino River. The tumultuous waters tumble down 165 metres, on three levels, to flow into the Nera, in the heart of a preserved and luxuriant nature. The spectacle is grandiose! The Marmore waterfall can be seen from several viewpoints, which can be reached by a staircase that climbs to the woods of San Liberatore. The waterfall is illuminated at night. The view is all the more beautiful because it seems to emerge from the abundant vegetation around it. This waterfall, one of the highest in Europe, owes its name to the calcium salts present on the rocks, which look like white marble. The only downside is that is expensive to visit, and in high season, the wait for the entrance ticket can be endless...
A little advice: before this trip, find out when the water is free (which varies according to the season), to make sure you get the best show. There is usually more flow between 4pm and 6pm in summer. Bring good shoes and a raincoat to enjoy the place. Guided tours are offered to discover all the secrets of the waterfall. You have the possibility to choose different itineraries (30 min, 1h...). Consult the website for details of the proposed tours.
