UNDERGROUND ORVIETO
The two large cavities open to the public were used by the sick for shelter during the Second World War.
A fascinating journey through the (parallel) underground city of Orvieto, which reveals a maze of caves dug by hand by the Etruscans to provide themselves with water. There are up to 1,200 caves in Orvieto, today about 440 are used by their owners under their houses. The two large caves that are open to visitors were used to make olive oil and housed many dovecotes in the Middle Ages. They were also used as a shelter for the sick during the Second World War (because they were connected to the hospital).
