MUSEO DELL'OPERA DEL DUOMO DI ORVIETO
Museum housing a beautiful collection of relics, Etruscan antiquities and works of renowned painters in Orvieto.
Founded in 1882, the Museum of the Cathedral's Works is housed in the Palazzo dei Papi (Palazzi Papali), which is adjacent to the dome and overlooks Piazza del Duomo. The visit to the museum follows the history of the city and its cathedral, traced through the precious collections on display. The "MODO" programme includes marvels from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, such as works by Coppo di Marcovaldo, Luca Signorelli (Self-portrait), Andrea Pisano, the Polyptych of St. Dominic by Simone Martini (1321)? There is also a splendid Maestà from the beginning of the 14th century: an imposing bronze sculpture once placed above the cathedral's portal. To underline, the beautiful scenography offered by this museum.
The visit continues in the Church of Sant'Agostino, in the heart of the medieval city, to contemplate the twelve apostles who originally adorned the twelve pillars of the central nave of the cathedral, as well as the sculptural group of The Annunciation, attributed to Francesco Mochi.
On the first floor (Palazzo Soliano) is exhibited the collection of Emilio Greco (1913-1995), a contemporary Italian sculptor and medallist from Orvieto who worked on three bronze portals of the cathedral. This collection presents his plastic and graphic works created between 1947 and 1991. In short, a fine collection of relics from the cathedral, Etruscan antiquities and works by renowned painters.
