POZZO DI SAN PATRIZIO
A remarkable well, one of the symbols of the city of Orvieto.
Another monument symbolizing the city is an architectural curiosity. Pope Clement VII, who took refuge in Orvieto after the sacking of Rome in 1527, ordered this well from Antonio da Sangallo to supply the city with water. It plunges to a depth of 60 metres. Its peculiarity lies in the two spiral staircases, with 70 windows, which descend without meeting each other (248 steps each), facing each other inside the well. The well was originally intended to be used by the fortress, which is why it was called Pozzo della Rocca.
