Ruins of an imperial villa overlooking the sea in Sperlonga.

The ruins of this magnificent residence dominate the sea. Emperor Tiberius received his guests here in a scenographic setting: the sea entered the cavities, forming basins and decorated pools dedicated to fish farming. Huge Hellenistic statues decorated the vast cave. Fragments of these have been discovered and displayed in the small archaeological museum. For years, this museum has worked to reconstruct these sculptural ensembles: today we can see the reconstituted Scylla ensemble, impressive in its majesty.

le musée est très beau, la grotte originale avec l'étang
le site est particulier car il est en bord de mer et consiste en une grotte naturelle sur des lacs artificiels construits par les Romains pour la pisciculture. Il est difficile d'imaginer qu'il était une fois de belles statues (dont les restes se trouvent maintenant dans le musée attenant) qui ont été brisées en morceaux dans les piscines en contrebas par ceux qui voulaient avoir un sol solide. Dans les vestiges de la villa derrière la porte, vous pouvez voir les restes d'un mur avec des mosaïques bleues et décoré de coquillages. Le musée est petit mais beau avec la reconstitution de l'aveuglement de Polyphème et les restes de la belle et mortelle Scylla. Pauvre Ulysse...
