BASILICA SAN BERNARDINO
Basilica with Renaissance facade, in honor of St. Bernardine of Siena, housing his mausoleum
At the top of a large staircase, the basilica was built from 1454 in honor of St. Bernardine of Siena, his body rests there today. Its facade is a tribute to the three orders (Doric, Ionic and Corinthian), with a horizontal crowning characteristic of the religious architecture of Abruzzo. The interior has three naves, with a monumental organ. Worth seeing: the mausoleum of St. Bernardino, a cubic chapel sculpted by Silvestro dell'Aquila in the 15th century. By the same artist, the double mausoleum of Maria Pereira Camponeschi and her daughter, in the choir.
