FORTE SPAGNOLO
Preserved Spanish fort from the time of Charles V's reign over southern Italy
The Spanish fort dates back to the time when the Spain of Charles V reigned over southern Italy. Its construction began in 1532 following the popular uprising in L'Aquila against foreign domination. The architect of this imposing fortress is the one of the Sant'Elmo castle in Naples. Never used militarily, it is in an exceptional state of preservation. Protected by a 23 m wide and 14 m deep moat, its walls can reach 10 m thick at the base. To see: the room which shelters the skeleton of mammoth.
