Trapezoidal fountain with stone masks from which spring water gushes
It is undoubtedly the most singular monument of L'Aquila. Commissioned in 1272 by the governor Lucchesino to the architect Tancredi da Pentina, it is in the form of a vast trapezium surrounded on three sides by walls adorned with stone masks from which spring water gushes. Legend has it that these masks represent, symbolically at least, the 99 lords who presided over the founding of L'Aquila.
