Majestic square in baroque and neoclassical style, once the social and cultural center of Aquila
This majestic square was the social and cultural center of the city. With a size of about one hectare, it is one of the largest squares in Italy. It is home to the Cathedral of Saints Giorgio and Massimo. Built in 1257 and destroyed by the earthquake of 1703, it was rebuilt in a style mixing baroque and neoclassical influences. There is also, among others, the church of Santa Maria del Suffragio, particularly affected by the earthquake of 2009, and restored following a Franco-Italian cooperation.
