AREA ARCHEOLOGICA DI AMITERNUM
Archaeological site containing the remains of a Roman theater and the foundations of an amphitheater
An ancient Italian city founded by the Sabines, Amiternum, whose name comes from the nearby river Aterno, was strategically located at the crossroads of via Cecilia (towards Teramo), via Claudia Nova (towards Navelli) and via Salaria (towards Rome). The Romans conquered the city in 293 B.C. Today we can admire the remains of the Roman theater with its perfect acoustics and the foundations of a large amphitheater of the first century B.C., which could hold 6,000 spectators.
