CAMPO IMPERATORE
Ski resort at an altitude of 2,200 m, among the highest in Abruzzo
Starting from Assergi, you reach Campo Imperatore by a winding road. This place is known as one of the highest ski resorts in Abruzzo. The slopes start at an altitude of 2,200 meters, along the slopes of the Gran Sasso massif. From here you can see the Corno Grande, 2,914 m high, which dominates the Apennines. From Fonte Cerreto, you can take the funicular that climbs to the Campo Imperatore plateau. It was in the Campo Imperatore hotel that Mussolini was imprisoned in 1943, before being freed during the Eiche operation.
