PARCO NAZIONALE DEL GRAN SASSO E MONTI DELLA LAGA
National Park composed of the Gran Sasso massif and the Laga Mountains
One of the three national parks that make Abruzzo proud and confirm its status as a green region. The Gran Sasso and Laga Mountains Park is made up of two mountain groups: the Gran Sasso massif (limestone, mainly rocky) and the group that dominates it, the Laga Mountains (densely wooded). Bordered by Lazio and Marche, its territory extends mainly in Abruzzo on 149,000 hectares of protected land. The park is home to more than 2,000 species of plants, such as the Apennine edelweiss and beautiful rare species of orchids. Officially a National Park since 1995, it is characterized by the Gran Sasso, typical of the mountains of the region, with dolomitic rock peaks among the highest in Europe (its peak, the Corno Grande, reaches 2,914 m). It is also home to the Calderone glacier, the only glacier in the Apennines and the most southerly in Europe. To the south, the high plateau of Campo Imperatore, the "little Tibet", which marks the limit of its karst moor, is of great beauty.
A stay in Abruzzo would not be complete without a stop in this national park which reveals a succession of breathtaking natural landscapes. Its vast natural territory also offers countless activities for visitors: trekking, hiking, mountain biking, winter sports, climbing and canyoning. You can easily find the different hiking routes (on foot, on horseback, by bike...) on the website.
