TORRE MEDICEA
Tower crenellated and cylindrical, symbol of the city and presenting the emblem of the Florentine family
This imposing tower crenellated and cylindrical was heavily damaged by the earthquake of 2009. Restored, it is now accessible again. Built in the 14th century, it is improperly called torre medicea, due to the presence on it of the emblem of the famous Florentine family. In fact, the Medici family ruled Santo Stefano from 1579 to 1743, when the town reached its peak thanks to the exploitation of the famous carfagna wool: this high quality raw material was sent to Tuscany for processing.
