NECROPOLI
Necropolis preserving tombs, the oldest of which date from the Iron Age
Not far from the church of Santa Maria ad Cryptas, the necropolis of Fossa is a 2,000square meter site whose oldest tombs date back to the Iron Age (8th-11th centuries BC), making it the most important protohistoric site in the region. Discovered unexpectedly in 1992, along the river Aterno, the peculiarity of this "little Stonehenge of Abruzzo" is the questioning of the menhirs erected as tombstones. A mysterious and enigmatic site, which certainly testifies to the historical importance of Fossa.
