Abbey representing Roman art with an ambo and three arches
To find this abbey, founded by the Carolingian emperor Louis II in 871, take the Torre de Passeri exit 16 km north of Popoli. San Clemente was built and then rebuilt, before displaying the magnificent three-arched facade that it has today. The visit is interesting because the abbey is an excellent example of Abruzzo Romanesque art and, for those interested in religious architecture, the ambo it houses is probably the most beautiful in the area.
