MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE D'ABRUZZO
Archaeological museum exhibiting the Warrior of Capestrano, a sculpture in the round and several finds
Abruzzo is a land rich in history. This archaeological museum, housed in a neoclassical villa built by Baron Frigerj in 1830, is the most important in Abruzzo. It gathers a great number of discoveries made in the area. The visit begins with its centerpiece: the Warrior of Capestrano. This sculpture in the round, measuring 2.10 meters, dated to the sixth century B.C., is one of the most important testimonies of the Italic peoples who occupied the peninsula. It shows a man in arms with a wide-brimmed hat. It was intended as a tombstone for a warrior who must have had a prominent social role. The exhibition is then organized according to a geographical route: each archaeological site of Abruzzo is meticulously detailed with all the artifacts discovered during the excavations. We will discover, for example, the bust of a female sculpture that accompanied the Warrior of Capestrano and that certainly represented his wife. There are also beautiful funeral beds in bronze or carved bone. The Roman period is also represented, with funerary reliefs and a colossal statue of Hercules. Finally, a room contains an impressive numismatic collection, with coins dating from Antiquity to the 19th century. Those who wish to continue their visit to the Civitella Museum, in Via G. Pianell, will find reconstructions of the city's history. Pianell, where the polychrome terracotta pediments of the acropolis of Teate, the ancient Chieti, are reconstructed.
