NATIONAL PARK OF THE MAJELLA
National Park of the Majella organized around the mountain, holding centers of visit
Abruzzo is home to three national parks, including the Majella Park. Larger than the Abruzzo National Park, the Majella National Park covers more than 74,000 hectares and is distinguished by its relief; in fact, 55% of the territory is at altitudes above 2,000 m. It is characterized by the uninterrupted presence of man since the Paleolithic period. This is an area to be discovered by archaeology enthusiasts, as there are numerous sites (such as the famous "tavola dei Briganti").
The park is organized around its mountain, the Majella, considered sacred and nourishing. It owes its name to a legend according to which the goddess Maja died lying there. Her petrified body gave its shape to this long massif. The rich Mediterranean and mountain flora that compose it includes many species of endemic flowers. The preserved fauna is also of incomparable diversity: brown bears, wolves, Apennine chamois, golden eagles, the Orsini viper, otters, deer... There are many hermitages clinging to the body of Maja: the most famous, that of Sant'Onofrio, is worth a visit.
To learn more, there are several visitor centers, museums, wildlife areas and botanical gardens. Hiking is certainly the best way to experience the most beautiful landscapes of the Majella National Park. Winter sports, climbing and mountaineering are also among the highlights.
