CAPPELLA DEL CROCIFISSO MIRACOLOSO
Chapel representing a fresco of the crucified Christ and a phial with blood that flowed out of it
This medieval oratory, annexed to the church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, houses a 13th century fresco depicting the crucified Christ, which enjoys a very special cult. On June 13, 1566, when the Turks invaded Ortona, blood spilled from the fresco and the abbot of the Cistercian monastery, to which the chapel belonged at the time, hastened to collect it in two ampoules, one of which is preserved in the chapel and the other in Venice.
