ROMANESQUE ANFITEATRO
Roman amphitheater of elliptical form which can welcome nearly 13 000 spectators.
Built during the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C., this Roman amphitheater is the most important ancient monument in Larino. Elliptical in shape, with four main doors (the northern one allowed the gladiators to enter, the southern one the evacuation of the bodies), it was the scene of gladiatorial and animal fights, and could accommodate about 13,000 spectators. One can recognize the cavea, the bleachers and the vomitories. Over the centuries, the site changed function and was used as a small necropolis during the Middle Ages.
