CATTEDRALE DEI SANTI NAZARIO, CELSO E VITTORE
Cathedral with a beautiful crypt with many archaeological remains.
Consecrated in May 1076, as indicated by a stone on one of the interior pilasters, and dedicated to the patron saints and martyrs of Trivento, Saints Nazario and Celso, this cathedral is one of the most important and oldest in the region. Originally Romanesque, it was built on an area considered sacred for centuries, specifically on the remains of an ancient pagan temple dedicated to Diana (using many reused stones). The cathedral of Trivento, which dominates the surrounding streets with its high bell tower, is a beautiful example of neoclassical religious architecture. The facade that we admire today dates from 1905, as do the pilasters that support the central dome. The portal dates back to the 13th century. The interior, divided into three naves, is baroque and was restructured in the eighteenth century. It houses a Sacra Famiglia sculpted by Amalia Dupré (1842-1928), as well as a precious 18th century organ.
San Casto Crypt. Under the choir of the cathedral is a beautiful crypt dating from the eleventh and twelfth centuries, dedicated to San Casto, and discovered by chance in 1928. Its interesting architecture reuses numerous archaeological remains and its construction was undertaken with stones reused from various buildings. The church contains several 13th century frescoes, a statue of the Madonna in trono, a stone bas-relief and the remains of a recently discovered baptistery.
