ST MARY LE STRAND
This church was built after an act passed in 1711, which advocated the creation of new churches in London. St Mary-Le-Strand, and others like it, were called "Queen Anne's churches" at the time, as the Queen showed a keen interest in their construction. The architect, James Gibbs, drew on the Mannerist inspirations of 16th- and 17th-century Italian churches. The west end features a semicircular porch reminiscent of Santa Maria della Pace in Rome. Inside, the imposing vault is reminiscent of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence.
