Astana can be reached by train from many of the country's cities. Just bear in mind the distances involved and the relative slowness of the trains: you're going to see a lot of the country! Allow 20 hours to travel between Astana and Almaty (or 13 hours on the new Talgo express train), 11 hours to reach Petropavlosk in the north of the country, and 16 hours to Kostanay. Getting to Aktau by train can take 2 days with the changes!
