This large, fully sculpted stele stands by the river, on the road leading to the aquarium and circus. It is a reminder of one of the roles the Soviets made Kazakhstan play: that of a land of deportation, through the regime's biggest gulags. The Karaganda gulag, just over 200 km southeast of Astana, and the Alzhyr concentration camp on the outskirts of the capital, where the wives of opponents of the Soviet regime were imprisoned.
