Small booklets describing the collections in English are available at the entrance, but the explanatory panels in English, present in all the rooms, are sufficient for a first approach of the 22 500 works of art that make up the fund of the museum. It brings together an important collection of contemporary, Russian and Kazakh art. The most interesting part of this is of course the works prohibited during the Soviet period and which could be saved by special collectors. More than 1 000 Soviet avant-garde paintings are thus permanently exposed, especially those of the painter Sergey Ivanovich Kalmykov (1891-1967), considered one of the major artists of this movement and who lived in Almaty from 1935. It also features a traditional arts room, where you can admire beautiful carpets, some furniture and musical instruments. You can also visit the room dedicated to Oriental, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Korean and Tibetan arts, although the exhibits are far from being the most attractive of the museum. The souvenir shop offers many carpets.
