Follow Kabanbay Batyr street from Independence Park for a quick walk to the station. Daily trains to Almaty (approx. 15-hour journey) or Turkestan (4-hour journey). There are also daily departures to Moscow (2-day journey) via Almaty and Astana. Shymkent is also regularly linked by train with Tashkent in Uzbekistan (every day except Friday and Sunday, but it takes just over 6 hours to cover the 230 km between the two cities via Arys station!)
