MUSÉE D'HISTOIRE - ANCIEN HÔPITAL
Museum in Sant Feliu de Guíxols offering a permanent exhibition on the evolution of the population over the last 150 years.
This museum of the history of Sant Feliu de Guíxols is built around several areas: the former hospital, which is the museum's main headquarters; the Monastery's monumental complex, which includes the second floor and the "Circuit of Towers"; the former botanical garden and the Turó (hill) dels Guíxols. These spaces will enable you to explore and discover all aspects of Sant Feliu de Guíxols society. The first area, the former hospital, was renovated in 1920 by the architect Joan Bordàs Salellas, and today offers spaces that have preserved their original structure and décor: ceramics, cladding, stained glass, botanical garden and galleries. The sculpture of the Virgin of Mercy by J. Oliver de Bezzi (1880-1970) has been placed in the building's alcove. On the second floor of the monastery, you can visit a permanent exhibition entitled A Changing Society. It shows how the population has changed over the last 150 years, with Sant Feliu de Guíxols' maritime, industrial and tourist activities playing a different role. It will also tell you about the different uses to which the building has been put over the centuries. Last but not least, you'll discover a collection presenting the different aspects of rural medicine, a collection which is the property of the museum. The first floor of the monastery is used for temporary exhibitions. The themes of the exhibitions are based on the history of health, society and local heritage. All exhibitions are designed to showcase people and their collective memory. That's why photography always plays a key role. The exhibitions are also designed to be highly didactic, and are aimed at all types of public, enabling them to discover the area via interactive resources. The last area of this cultural complex is the former botanical garden. It's a very quiet space where you can relax or, for the more active, take part in one of the many workshops on medicinal plants. In general, if you'd like to find out more about the city, the museum organizes activities for all publics: guided tours, lectures, workshops and itineraries to discover the city's heritage.
