Already back at work and in the mood for an August 15 weekend break? But where to go over the August 15 weekend? Here's our selection of destinations for a travel break that will do you a world of good !
Where to go for the August 15 weekend, on the beach but away from the crowds
The Côte d'Azur and its crowded beaches in summer, or Greece, which sells out in August, aren't exactly good ideas for relaxing on the beach over the August 15 weekend... Why not try Montenegro instead? Less popular than other Mediterranean destinations, Montenegro is a great idea if you're dreaming of paradise beaches that are quieter than elsewhere in Europe.
The country boasts numerous beaches along its 200 km of coastline on the Adriatic. One of the most beautiful and least frequented is Jaz beach, with its beautiful stretch of white sand and crystal-clear waters.
If you want to enjoy the sun at a reasonable price, we also recommend Tunisia, just a 2-hour flight from Paris! After a difficult period, the country is finally getting its head above water, and tourists are back in complete safety thanks to the work of the authorities.
And, good news, the beaches aren't overrun yet, so it's a good time to go!
We particularly recommend Port el Kantaoui in the Sousse region, for its fine sandy beaches and emerald waters.
The seaside resort boasts a large number of all-inclusive hotels offering good value for money, such as Soviva, a large, comfortable resort with a large swimming pool and fun slides, and the elegant Fleur de Thé tea room for a delicious family lemonade break.
You can also relax in a 5-star hotel for a reasonable price, such as the Green Park Palace, a new hotel with a huge swimming pool and waterfront bar. In the evening, you're free to go out and party in Port el Kantaoui, listening to live music at Golf Brau for example, or to stay at your resort and enjoy the night-time entertainment.
To get away from the August summer crowd, we also suggest Germany! The country boasts no fewer than 350 islands, and summer is the perfect time to take a dip. The island of Sylt, Germany's fourth-largest, boasts a beach no less than 40 kilometers long and spa resorts such as Westerland, ideal for a zen break.
Rügen, Germany's largest island with a surface area of 926 km², offers everything a holidaymaker could wish for: 60 km of immense beaches overlooking the Baltic, unspoilt nature and superb seaside resorts.
Where to go for the August 15 weekend for a breath of fresh air!
Still in Germany, and just a few hours' drive from the French border, we recommend a trip to the famous Black Forest for a breath of fresh air away from the heat. In August, the forest is particularly green and pleasant. You'll enjoy hiking through pine trees, rivers, crystal-clear lakes and lush valleys. Covering 1,400 km², it's Germany's largest nature park, but don't worry: the forest trails are extremely well-marked, so you won't get lost!
Ireland is also an excellent destination in August for those who want to get away from the heat. In summer, the weather is pleasant and the scenery quite simply splendid. How could you fail to fall under the spell of Connemara, sung by Sardou, or the famous Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO-listed site whose 40,000 basalt columns leave you speechless?
And if you're a fan ofGame of Thronesand if you're a fan of the series Game of Thrones, and you're just about to watch the new season, don't miss a walk through Dark Hedges in County Antrim. It's easily reached by car via Belfast. It's the famous Royal Road from the TV series: a magical avenue of beech trees!
Another pleasant destination in summer, because it's less crowded than the countries of southern Europe: the Czech Republic! Not only does the country offer very good value for money in terms of accommodation and restaurants, it also boasts beautiful green landscapes in summer, ideal for walks and outdoor sports.
For example, we recommend the region known as Czech Switzerland because of its rugged terrain reminiscent of the Swiss mountains, except that it's much cheaper than Switzerland... Just 1 hour's drive from Prague, it's the perfect destination for hiking.
The gorges of the little Kamenice river are very well known: a walk along the river on narrow footbridges or a boat trip between steep-sided canyons are magical moments for nature lovers. And for the record, it was in this region that the famous film The World of Narnia was shot!
Where to go for a city break on the weekend of August 15
If you're looking for a city break in Europe that doesn't get too hot, the Nordic countries are the perfect choice. Not only are the temperatures pleasant, but there's also plenty of daylight, as summer days are much longer in northern European countries.
Rather than touristy Stockholm, we recommend Helsinki, the capital of Finland.
Just a 3-hour flight from Paris, the city offers a complete change of scenery on the borders of Europe and the Far East, with its many museums and monuments. It's also a trendy Nordic city on the cutting edge of design, very cosmopolitan, with plenty of nightlife options. And for a seaside atmosphere, a boat trip to discover the islands is always welcome.
But if you're dreaming of the dolce vita , a trip to Florence is just what you need! The capital of Tuscany is a magnificent Italian city that's easy to discover in a weekend. Unlike Rome or Milan, it offers lower prices, even in summer. And it's easy to visit on foot. In just a few hours, with its picturesque streets, superb squares and numerous monuments, you'll be able to take in the sights without spending a cent.
Finally, if Portugal attracts you for a city break, take a trip to Porto! This fascinating, timeless city, often overlooked in favor of Lisbon, offers a palette of colorful waterside buildings and magnificent architectural discoveries where Baroque and modern styles mingle. And value for money is excellent in Porto, even in August.
It's also the kingdom of wine cellars, thanks to the fertile Douro Valley and the epicenter of Portugal's famous port beverage. This is your chance to get to grips with this local beverage through tastings such as at Portologia, a renowned brand that also has an address in Paris.
Escape to a festival
Why not take advantage of this long weekend for a festival getaway?
From August 16 to 22, it's party time in Spain at Benicassim's Rototom Sunsplash, an international reggae festival now in its 27th year. This year, the festival celebrates Africa, and as usual, some of the biggest names in the genre will be performing. It's Europe's biggest reggae festival.
