CHURCH OF SAN NICOLAS
Church of Gothic and Baroque styles, one of the oldest in Valencia, with original frescoes by Dionis Vidal.
Erected as a parish church around 1242, the church of San Nicolás de Bari y San Pedro Mártir, popularly known as San Nicolas, is one of the oldest in Valencia. It has two basic styles, the Gothic of the mid-15th century for the part commissioned by Alfonso de Borja, the future Pope Calixto III, and the Baroque, which is very present in the interior decoration. After a colossal renovation work that took three years to complete, we can now appreciate the so-called "Valencian Sistine Chapel", since this renovation has brought to light almost 2,000m2 of original frescoes, created by the Baroque painter Dionís Vidal.
