SILK MUSEUM
New museum with a great variety of silk objects, housing the most important corporate archives in Europe
Opened in May 2016, this new silk museum allows visitors to discover the history of silk in Valencia and also to visit the old Colegio del Arte mayor de la Seda . A 15th-century building, of Gothic foundation but in Baroque style, which has undergone a very important renovation, led by Javier Catala and will have required 68,000 hours of work and the artisanal repair of 75,000 ceramic tiles. Among the artistic gems that have been restored are the frescoes in the main hall where the school was located. Made in 1757, the floor was inspired by the famous fountain in Rome's Piazza Navona, with a representation of the four continents known at the time via their main rivers. Today, the museum houses the most important corporate archives in Europe: 48 manuscripts, 660 books and 97 archive boxes, which make it possible to reconstruct five centuries of the history of the corporation. The museum also houses 16th-century Flemish tapestries that have just been restored by the Real Fábrica de Tapices (Royal Tapestry Factory).
At the end of the visit, you can go to the shop, which offers a wide variety of silk objects: bags, pouches, shawls and shoes. There is something for everyone.
