CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA
In Alcoy, you will not be able to miss the blue silhouette of its steeple, because it is the most emblematic building in the city. But also a place that has experienced a turbulent history. Built in the th century, the first church, in Baroque style, was completely destroyed during the Civil War and its reconstruction, in the same place, but with more stylized shapes and larger space only years ago. Highlights of the visit: the paintings of Ramón Castaner, an essential figure in contemporary Valencian painting. Painted in 1957 but renovated in 2010 as well as many other parts of the church, they adorn the walls and the vault of the presbytery. In particular, the birth of the virgin, The visitation, the birth of Jesus and the Assumption of the virgin. With, for this last painting, a very large number of blond angels, brown and black, symbolizing the universality of the church. Since the last restoration, a half-pole blue sphere with 202 resin stars has also decorated the dome.
