FÊTE DES MOROS Y CRISTIANOS DE VILLAJOYOSA

During the last week of July, the entire town of Villajoyosa lives in its great feast of the Moros and Cristianos, which commemorates and dramatically recreates a battle that occurred in 1538. In the face of the attack of barbary pirates led by Zalé-Arraez, the tradition reported that St Marthe came to help the inhabitants by causing a tidal wave swallowing the privateers vessels, thereby preventing them from landing. In thanks, the Holy Father became the patron of the village and this representation of the Moorish landing is since the central event of the festivities. A particularity of the city compared to the other fiestas of moros moros from the whole of Spain and which made it classified as international tourist interest. Apart from this commemoration, the celebration is an opportunity for many activities: gastronomic contests, verbenas, evening festivities, music concerts and fireworks, as always in the Valencian community.
