MYSTÈRE D’ELCHE

Every year in the city of Elche, a theatrical performance has been staged on the Death, Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin since the 15th century. This lyrical and religious drama is sung in the Valencian language and performed on 14 and 15 August in the Basílica de Santa Maria and in the streets of the old town. Classified as an intangible heritage of humanity by Unesco, it is a living testimony of European religious theatre of the Middle Ages. More than 300 volunteers participate each year in the performance of the "mystery" of Elche.
