FORTRESS-CULTURAL CENTRE
Castle-fortress of the XVI century, a beautiful example of the military architecture of the Renaissance, cultural center of Santa Pola.
Designed by Italian engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli, this th century fortress castle is a fine example of Renaissance military architecture in the coastal defence plan of the Kingdom of Valencia against attacks by barbary pirates. Became a property of the city on 9 July 1859, he lost his fortress function to be successively headquarters of the town hall or hospital. Today it has become the cultural centre of the city and has a variety of facilities including the Museum of the sea, centred on the history of Santa Pola and articulated around six main themes: prehistory, Iberians, le ilicitanus, coast fortification, fishing and salt marshes and the chapel of the Virgen de Loreto. Bearing the name of the patron of Santa Pola, this chapel is located in the Bastion del Rey, a secular space from the origins of the castle.
The th-century defensive system is complemented by three other watch towers, which lie in the saltworks, the tower of Tamarit, south-east of Sierra; the Escaletes tower and the Atalayola tower, on which the lighthouse was built.
