SAN SALVADOR AND SANTA MARIA CATHEDRAL
Parish church of Valencian Gothic style, the most important of Orihuela, on the remains of the Aljima mosque.
It is the most important parish church of Orihuela, which stands on the remains of the Aljima Mosque since the first third of the th century. In the Gothic Valencian style, she was first a simple church, then the main church of the city on the order of Alphonse X of Castille in 1281 before becoming college in 1413 by permission of Pope Benedict XIII, and Cathedral in 1564, when the city was endowed with a archiepiscopal century. Its plan is in the Latin cross and has three access doors: the Cadenas and Loreto style, Gohique style and the Annunciation style in its plateresque phase. The cathedral also houses the museum of sacred art which preserves important works of art, including the temptation of Velázquez's Saint Thomas.
