MONASTERY IN FLAX
A large religious center on a hillside with several scarlet-walled chapels and flower-filled courtyards
Po Lin Monastery, founded in 1906, is Hong Kong's largest and most prestigious Buddhist monastery, nestling in the Ngong Ping mountains at the foot of the Great Buddha Tian Tan. It reflects a classical architectural style inspired by the palaces of the Song dynasty, with its overlapping roofs, colorful frescoes and detailed ornamentation.
The Main Buddha Hall, completed in 1970, is adorned with three majestic bronze Buddha statues representing his past, present and future incarnations.
The Great Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas, at the far end of the complex, inaugurated in 2014, is an architectural marvel. Its walls are covered with thousands of small golden statues, each unique, creating a sacred and sumptuous atmosphere. This hall also houses meditation rooms and a library of sacred texts. If you're lucky, you'll be able to hear the monks' melodious prayers, a moment of suspended magic.
The monastery also includes buildings such as the Skanda Bodhisattva Hall, dedicated to the protection of the Dharma, and spaces such as the Refectory and the Meditation Hall, where the atmosphere invites meditation. Surrounded by lush gardens, Po Lin Monastery embodies a unique serenity that attracts many devotees daily to pray, make offerings and light incense sticks, as well as visitors passing through to contemplate the beauty of this place, surrounded by verdant mountains. A visit that should be combined with a visit to the Great Buddha. A must-see!
