Tung Chung, located on the northern side of the island, a new city steeped in skyscrapers, was once a rural village. In the th century, the site hosted the last heirs of the Song dynasty and their fugitive court. There is hardly anything left of the fort built in the th century to combat opium trafficking and defend the coasts. To the north, Chek Moon Kok Island is home to the international airport, opened in 1997, connected to Hong Kong and Kowloon through a network of motorways and bridges.
