TUNG CHUNG
This site on the north side of the island was home to the last heirs of the Song dynasty and their fugitive court in the century
Tung Chung, north of Lantau, is a new town bristling with skyscrapers. In the XIIIᵉ century, the last heirs of the Song dynasty took refuge here. Although almost nothing remains of the XIXᵉ century fort, built to combat opium trafficking, the history of the place remains interesting. Nearby, Chek Lap Kok Island is home to the international airport, opened in 1997 and linked to Hong Kong by metro, bridges and freeways. Today, Tung Chung is above all the gateway to the Ngong Ping cable car and the Big Buddha.
