CHE KUNG TEMPLE
Temple dedicated to a Song dynasty general, famous for putting down a revolt in southern China
Che Kung Temple honors a Song dynasty general (960-1279) famous for crushing a revolt in southern China. According to legend, he saved the village of Tai Wai from a plague epidemic, thus becoming a Taoist deity and patron saint. Every year, on his birthday, thousands of devotees gather to light incense, consult soothsayers and turn a prayer wheel three times, thus warding off bad luck. Not far away, the Kwun Yum temple is dedicated to the goddess of mercy.
