SAI KUNG COUNTRY PARK
This 44 country park is also the starting point for the famous 100 km MacLehose hiking trail
Sai Kung Country Park, a 44 km² natural gem listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Hong Kong Global Geopark, is a must-see destination for nature and adventure lovers. The park can be reached via a scenic coastal road. Allow around twenty minutes to reach Pak Tam Chung, where you'll find the Visitors' Center and the gate marking the park entrance. From here, only minibuses, some cabs and residents are allowed inside.
Nature. This park is a great place to get away from it all for a weekend, thanks in particular to its heavenly beaches such as those in Tai Long Wan Bay. These stretches of fine sand, bathed in crystal-clear waters, evoke a vacation at the end of the world, just a few hours from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. Hong Kongers flock here to relax and enjoy the magnificent scenery, which combines mountains, mangroves and dense forests. An ancient legend has it that the Hakka villagers of Sai Kung used the mangroves to create a unique red-brown dye. During a storm, the dye was seen as a divine blessing, staining the sea red. The mangroves, now preserved, remain a natural witness to this local history.
Hiking. Sai Kung Country Park is also famous for being the starting point of the famous MacLehose Trail, an iconic 100-kilometer hiking trail divided into several sections and passing through breathtaking scenery. To access the trail, follow the paved road almost to its end, then take the road past the dam. At each trailhead, detailed maps indicate elevation gain, level of difficulty and route, enabling hikers to prepare for their adventure.
Activities. For marine enthusiasts, the Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park is ideal for snorkeling and kayaking. Nearby, the Sheung Yiu Folk Museum, an ancient fortified Hakka village, offers an immersion in the rural life of yesteryear, blending history and culture. Hiking, swimming, cultural exploration or simply contemplating the scenery, Sai Kung is a true haven of peace where nature reigns supreme. Thanks to its accessibility and enchanting setting, this park is one of Hong Kong's most popular destinations for immersing yourself in unspoilt nature and enjoying a memorable experience. A must for nature lovers.
